A leading Finnish company in energy and telecommunications infrastructure, Insplan Oy, monitors snow loads on the power transmission grid’s conductors in cooperation with the Finnish national power network company Fingrid Oyj, which secures reliable electricity for their customers and the entire society. The accumulation of snow or frost on the surface of overhead power lines is monitored using wireless measuring devices supplied by Small Data Garden Oy, a Finnish provider of IoT solutions, which communicate over LPWAN networks.
The installation of these devices is done from the air without interrupting electricity distribution, requiring Insplan’s specialised expertise in both planning and installation. In addition, Insplan has expertise in interpreting and utilising sensor data, which enables predictive maintenance. Repair and maintenance activities are expensive and difficult to arrange, so it’s crucial that the installed device solution is long-lasting and maintenance-free.
“Insplan is at the forefront of bringing IoT-enabled flexible solutions to an industry that, in many ways, still relies on traditional methods. These solutions enhance infrastructure efficiency, safety, and operational reliability without requiring extensive overhauls. We are pleased with the support and expertise provided by Small Data Garden, both in their deliveries and in exploring future opportunities,” says Janne Salokannel, Maintenance Manager at Insplan Oy.
“It’s been easy and straightforward to work with Insplan because everything is handled with uncompromising detail, and you can clearly see the professional touch in their work,” notes Petri Hänninen, CTO of Small Data Garden.
